Brian Keefer – President

Brian Keefer is a proven executive with extensive profit and loss experience in multiple organizations. His background includes cross-functional experience in executive and operations management, start-ups, turnarounds, product management, marketing, strategic planning, and business development. Brian has a consistent track record of leading companies to unprecedented levels of growth and profitability.

Prior to starting ATIC, Brian was Founder, President & CEO of Family Security Insurance Company, Inc. (“FSIC”), a multi-line, multi-state personal lines company. FSIC became the leading writer of Louisiana property insurance through the independent agent channel within eighteen months of entering the state, at very profitable levels. Prior to founding FSIC, Mr. Keefer was Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Risk Officer of Bankers Insurance Group. Brian led a team that turned around Bankers P&C operations from record losses to four straight years of record profitability while growing revenue 38%.

Prior to Bankers, Brian managed Louisiana for Progressive Auto returning them to profitability while growing revenue 50% from $125 to $190 million. Companies under Brian’s leadership were considered Carrier of Choice and won Company of the Year and Most Improved Carrier awards by PIA and Big I Agent Associations.
Brian earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration and Computer Science from the University of Kansas.

Mitch Hendrix – CFO

Mitch is a certified public accountant with over 20 years of accounting experience, over 15 of which have been within P&C accounting.  His areas of responsibility have included corporate accounting and finance, corporate planning, and corporate compliance.

Prior to joining ATI, Mitch was the CFO of Family Security Insurance Company, Inc. (FSIC) and directed all accounting and finance, planning, and compliance.  While at FSIC, he designed the Company’s accounting policies/practices, developed internal controls over financial reporting, directed the financial reporting (STAT & GAAP), and coordinated the audit with an independent accounting firm.

Prior to joining FSIC, Mitch was the CFO of Bankers Business Group and prior to that served as AVP/Controller of Bankers Insurance Group.  While at Bankers, he helped design the Company’s accounting policies/practices and internal controls over financial reporting, led the financial reporting (STAT & GAAP) team, and coordinated the audits with an independent accounting firm.

Mitch earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of South Florida.

Pier Westra, Vice President of Claims & Operations

Pier has 32 years claims and operations experience, encompassing both direct handling and management of personal and commercial lines property and casualty losses. This includes all Homeowners and Dwelling forms, Small Business and complex Commercial policies to include Fidelity, Business Income, Boiler and Machinery and Industrial/Manufacturing operations.

After college, Pier began his career working for Allstate Insurance as a multi-line adjuster in Florida and becoming a part of the catastrophe team, working claims in Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana as well as responding to Hurricane Hugo in Charleston, S.C. Since that time, Pier has held various management roles with companies that include Claims Manager with the Florida JUA’s (precursor to Citizens), Property Director with the Hartford, Vice President for third party administrator American Claims Management and most recently as Vice President of Claims with Mount Beacon Insurance. During that time, he was variably responsible for both claims and operational activities and in recent years, was charged with overseeing a multi-office organization managing more than 130,000 policies in 19 states, with over $140M in written premium.

In addition to overseeing daily claims and operations activities, Pier has had a hand in the direct management of many of the industry’s most impactful wind events, which in addition to Hurricane Hugo encompassed Hurricanes Andrew, Erin, Opal, Charley, Frances, Jeanne, Ivan, Wilma, Gustav, Ike and Superstorm Sandy. Other major non-wind events include the Oakland Hills Fires, Northridge Earthquake, numerous significant hail events and several of southern California’s major wildfire catastrophes.

Pier graduated from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL with a B.A. in Sociology, minoring in Criminal Justice.

 

Michael Peterson – Pricing Manager

Michael has a unique blend of analytical, pricing, rating, actuarial, competitive analysis, and exposure management experience for Homeowners, Dwelling Fire, and Auto. He gains a solid understanding of the competitive landscape in the marketplace and balances that the expected loss results to determine a proper blend of competitive and adequate rate levels.

At Family Security Michael developed an innovative pricing methodology that provided infinitely fine pricing segmentation at rates consistent with how reinsurers would price the property risk. This proved quite successful and was copied by the largest nationwide property insurer. Michael has also served as Product Manager for an Arizona Auto carrier and served a critical role as Pricing Actuary at Bankers Insurance during its turnaround. At Bankers, Michael fundamentally redesigned and implemented new rating plans for Homeowners and Dwelling Fire programs in multiple states. He teamed up with Peggy Holland and Brian Keefer to launch a new innovative Homeowners product into the Louisiana marketplace that exceeded the company’s “stretch plan” for premium growth.
Prior to Bankers, as Homeowners/Auto Pricing Actuary for the southern region of the Encompass Division of Allstate Insurance, Michael designed and implemented new rating plans for their Private Passenger Auto, Homeowners, and Dwelling Fire programs in seven states. In his final years at Encompass, Michael helped design and implement the Allstate Strategic Risk Management program into several states, which is regarded as one of the most innovative and sophisticated rating plans in the industry.
Michael received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.

Peggy Holland – Underwriting Manager

Peggy possesses a unique blend of effective underwriting, compliance, product analyses and marketing experience providing an extraordinary company/consumer perspective which enables her to substantially contribute to productivity, growth and profitability, retention and consumer satisfaction while enjoying the challenge of doing business in hurricane/coastal regions.

Peggy most recently teamed up with Brian Keefer and Michael Peterson at Family Security and played an indispensable role by managing all underwriting aspects of that successful franchise. At Bankers Insurance Group she aggressively reinvented that company’s historically unprofitable products. The highly successful strategic actions of this team resulted in the lowest loss ratios and highest underwriting profitability in the company’s personal lines history. In addition, they created, developed and implemented a new Louisiana Homeowners product, including rules, rates and forms, which far exceeded the company’s first year plan for growth and profitability.

Prior to Bankers, Peggy served as AVP Underwriting for Liberty American Insurance Group, a subsidiary of Philadelphia Insurance Company. Her successes with Liberty American included resolving or recommending resolutions for significant, long term underwriting, compliance and customer service issues resulting in meeting or exceeding company plans for loss ratios, growth, retention, customer service, and production and expense ratios. Peggy served on the Catastrophe Response team during the devastating hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005. She also received much training and experience, prior to Liberty American, in the Mercury and Allstate underwriting departments.


Kevin Steele – Auto Product Manager

Kevin has over 20 years of experience working with Personal Lines insurance products, focusing heavily on Private Passenger Auto.  While initially working in Customer Service for Zurich Personal Insurance, Kevin soon moved on to work in Product at Progressive Insurance.  Since then he has worked as a Product Manager for AIG Personal Auto, Horace Mann Insurance and most recently with Esurance.

His broad knowledge of auto pricing experience coupled with his work in launching new products and new states for various companies brings a strong Auto focus to Allied Trust.  He has always had a strong focus on Regulatory and Compliance issues and has directly managed staff that focused on changes in the regulatory environment.  While at Esurance Kevin designed, priced and launched the Private Passenger Auto program for the state of North Carolina.

Kevin graduated Magna Cum Laude from Colorado State University-Pueblo with a BSBA in Business Management in 1995.  He went on to earn his MBA from the College of William and Mary in 2005.

Jennifer Gardner – Central Texas Territory Manager

Jennifer has a distinctive mix of industry knowledge that she brings to Allied Trust. Her experience includes Underwriting, Claims, Claims Leadership, Training, Sales, and Marketing. Most of her career has been spent dedicated to solving the insurance needs of Independent Agents in Central and South Texas.

Jennifer was a Territory Manager with Foremost Insurance since 2002. During those thirteen years she consistently maintained profitable and steady growth among a varied portfolio of products, including homeowners, dwelling fire, auto, recreational vehicles, and small commercial.

Prior to her career with Foremost Insurance, Jennifer worked with the Non Standard Auto product department at Nationwide Insurance. She has had a successful career in Claims and Underwriting with Farmers Insurance.

Jennifer is licensed as a General Lines Property & Casualty agent and a General Lines Property & Casualty Adjuster. She holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter Designation. She graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with degrees in Political Science and Anthropology.

Becky Martin, Houston & East Texas Territory Manager

Becky brings a wealth of insurance and agency knowledge and relationships to the Allied Trust team. She has enjoyed a 36 year Marketing career in the Texas insurance marketplace.
Becky most recently served as the Senior Texas Territory Manager for American Strategic Insurance where she built up ASI from its entry to the market to where they are today. She joined ASI in 2004 serving as Territory Manager for the Houston, South, and West Texas markets over the past twelve years.

After attending Midwestern State University, Becky began her insurance career as a CSR for an independent agency in Lubbock. In 1984, she became the West Texas marketing rep for American States Insurance Company. While at American States, Becky obtained the Accredited Adviser in Assurance (AAI) and Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations. She was also the recipient of the President’s Award for life production for two consecutive years.

Becky then joined Republic Insurance Company in 1997 where she was responsible for agency development, territory management and production for all of West Texas as well as the entire state of New Mexico before joining ASI.

Eddie Story, Louisiana Territory Manager

Eddie has extensive experience in underwriting, marketing and agency management in the P&C and L&H industry over the past 30 years in Louisiana and several other states within the Southeast Region.

At Family Security, Eddie recruited and managed a very loyal and profitable Louisiana agency base.  The company was one of the fastest growing in the state during his four year tenure.

Eddie was responsible for recruiting, contracting and training all agents and staff for the program.  Previously, he launched an independent agency program for Direct General Insurance Co. in Tennessee and worked at Allstate Insurance Company in numerous positions including General Partner, Integration Product Manager and National Sales Manager.

During his years at Allstate, Eddie traveled extensively and managed a nine state region with employee agents and independent agents for both P&C and L&H products.  He also served as Louisiana Marketing Representative for Arrowhead General Insurance Agency and Automotive Casualty Insurance Company.

Eddie attended the University of New Orleans form 1979 to 1981 studying Pre-Physical Therapy. Eddie received his P&C license in 1987 and his L&H license in 2001.

Kya Miles, Underwriter

Kya has extensive Personal Lines underwriting experience in numerous coastal exposed states.  Throughout her career, she has focused on building and maintaining strong agency relationships while applying excellent critical thinking skills in making balanced underwriting decisions.

Kya served as the Personal Lines Underwriter for Louisiana with Family Security as well as working with Willis Towers Watson as a Client Service Specialist, Wright Flood as a Flood Underwriter, sales experience as a Licensed Producer with Allstate, and Personal Lines Underwriting, Homeowners Customer Service and policy processing at Bankers.

Kya has her CISR designation, active 2-20 and 2-15 licenses and her Associate in Arts in General studies and Associate in Science in Business degrees from St. Petersburg College.

Kandi Brown, Underwriter

Kandi has over 24 years’ experience in insurance, with 17 years as an Auto Underwriting Specialist. Throughout her career she has focused her professional experience on building relationships with agents and solving problems. She focuses on team building in making underwriting decisions as it is more important than ever that agents have the right teamwork with the company to develop new business opportunities to their fullest.

Kandi’s prior experience includes underwriting, claims representative, human resource assistant, worker’s compensation auditor, and 1st grade teacher, with several companies and schools, however, most of her experience has been in auto underwriting with State Farm Insurance. She enjoys working with the agents and understanding their market to help make their business profitable.

Kandi has her Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management from Warner Southern College and an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Polk State College.
